What are heat pumps?

Heat pumps extract heat from the environment to heat or cool a space or provide domestic hot water, by consuming minimum electricity.

Modern heat pumps use inverter technology to modify energy consumption according to the needs and prevailing conditions while, at the same time, maintaining the desired temperature. As such, they are the best-value option for home heating and cooling, offering even greater energy savings.

In winter, the heat pump extracts heat from the environment and channels it into the interior of the house. Conversely, in summer, it extracts heat from the interior and discharges it into the environment. In short, the operation of the heat pump is similar to that of refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. It can be installed using the existing radiators, fan coils, or an underfloor heating system.

How energy cost savings are achieved

The heat pump works on the principle of the refrigeration cycle through the compression of the refrigerant liquid. Thus, heat is transferred from the outdoor environment to the internal space and vice versa. The energy source for a heat pump is the air, which it uses to heat or cool a given space with little use of electricity. Specifically, 75% of the energy is renewable and extracted from the air, while the remaining 25% is electricity.

The degree of efficiency of each heat pump is represented by the COP (Coefficient of Performance) for heating and the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling. For example, a pump with a COP of 4.0 means that for every unit of electricity it consumes, it delivers 4 units of thermal energy. Therefore, the higher the COP, the more efficient a pump is.

Modern heat pumps have COP values well above 3.5, and, as a result, they are classified as renewable energy sources and contribute to the protection of the environment. This is also why heat pumps are the best-value option for residential heating and cooling, according to the research «Comparison of heating costs from various technologies», carried out by the Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants of the National Technical University of Athens in December 2021.

In addition, the heat pump can be combined with a PowerGreen photovoltaic system (Net-Metering), thus the costs for heating, cooling, and hot water supply will be even lower or eliminated altogether since the energy consumed will be produced by the photovoltaic system.
